Inside a Promo – Promotions can apply to a specific product(s), or a catalog, or to shipping. They can be restricted to orders of a certain value, or to shoppers with a certain email address. They can be single-use, or they can start and end on given dates.
In other words, promotions are endlessly flexible and utilized by many stores. The intent of this article is to walk an Admin user through the different steps required to create a promotion, while highlighting the different functionalities and considerations.
Create
From the Admin dashboard, navigate to Marketing > Manage Promotions. On this page you can create promotions by clicking ‘Create Promotion’ button on either the upper or lower right-hand side.
It is from this page that site Admins have several options in how they might configure promotions running on their site. The first step in creating a Promotion is to fill out the Basic Promotion Details as shown below.
Basic Promotion Details
Promo Title | Enter the title of the promotion. Not viewable by customers | |
Promo Code | Enter the letters numbers that you want customers to enter on the shopping cart page in order to activate the promo. i.e.. Springterm% or Save50. Promo codes are case insensitive | |
Description | Enter a brief description of what this promotion does, it will display to customers in the shopping cart | |
Priority | This is an integer value (1,2,3,42, etc. If all promotions are the same priority, all applicable promotions are applied. If you have multiple promotions that would normally apply, for example a priority '1' promotion and priority '2' promotion, the higher priority '1' promotion will be applied. NOTE: Priority: 0 means that the promo can always be combined with any other promotion! | |
Promo Status | This will enable/disable this promotion for use by customers | |
Auto Applied | If this is checked, the site will try to apply the promotion to every customer's cart. Those who qualify based on the following promotion conditions (Discounts, limits, Requirements and Customer Targeting) will automatically get this discount | |
Discount Description Manager | This text will appear next to each item on the shopping cart that a line item or gift promotion applies to (can be left blank) | |
Product Discount Alert | This text will appear on products that this promotion applies to can be left blank) |
Setup Promo Discounts
After filling in the basic fields listed above, you'll need to setup the promo discount on the top of the right hand side of the form. Note that a promotion can contain both a discount on shipping and another discount type, but only one of the other types (indicated by the radio button selections below) can be chosen per promotion.
Discount Shipping | This promotion will apply a shipping discount for the specified shipping methods. | |

Gift With Purchase | This promotion will automatically add the specified products) to the cart with the specified discount | |
Discount Least Expensive Item | Discounts the least expensive items in a cart when it contains the specified minimum number of discountable items. For example, to set up a buy-1-get-1: Set number of items to discount to 1 and required number of items to ?. Use the product, category, manufacturer, or department rules to define which items are eligible |
Select Promo Limits
Once you've selected the discount type above, you can specify limits on the discount. These rules limit when the coupon will work, and how much of a discount can be given through the promotion. To limit which orders a promotion will apply to, see the Promo Requirements section below.

Select Promo Requirements
The rules created in this section can restrict promotions to only work for certain customers, products, etc. Try to use as few of these restrictions as possible for each promotion, to limit confusion for your customers and staff.
Enable Product Requirement | This promotion will only be valid for the products selected. Required quantity must be met for the product to be matched | |

Enable E-Mail Address Requirement | This promotion will only be valid for the promotion. Promotion will only be valid for users whose e-mail address is included in the required field, separated by a comma. Required quantity must be met for the product to be matched. | |
Enable Customer level Requirement | This promotion will only be valid for users with one of the specified customer levels. | |

Setup Customer Targeting
The rules in this section set up restrictions based on what customers have bought in the past. These can be used to prevent customers from using a promotion more frequently than you want, while still allowing them to use the promo multiple times if it's been long enough (or they've purchased enough) to meet your requirements.
For all of the rules below, to set up a promotion that doesn't expire just set the end date to a date far in the future. The start date can also be set in the past, to make these restrictions include historical orders.
By Number of Past Orders | Enter the title of the promotion. Not viewable by customers | |
By Amount Spent on Past Purchases | This promotion will only be valid for users who have past orders within the given date range that sum to more than value specified | |
By Number of Products Purchased | This promotion will only be valid for users who have past orders within the given date range that contain more of the specified products than the given value | |
